Lions Win Two More

by Erik Shupe

February 01, 2010

The Lions hosted two home contests this week after having traveled to Hoisington for the previous week for the Winter Jam tournament.  Clifton-Clyde came to town Tuesday night for a non-league contest.  They brought with them one of the tallest players in the state in their 6’9” center Potuzak.  The Eagles game plan was obvious early as they pounded the ball inside.  Potuzak had 10 points by the end of the first and had the Eagles thinking upset as they held a 14-10 lead over the Lions.

However, the Lions came out strong in the second quarter limiting Potuzak to just 4 points in the quarter while scoring 21 themselves, good for a 31-23 half-time lead.  The third quarter saw the Eagles come roaring out, but this time it was from the outside as their point guard hit three 3 pointers as the Eagles evened the score at 39.  In the fourth quarter the Lions buckled down defensively holding Clifton-Clyde to just 5 points while Minneapolis went 6-8 from the free throw line for a 49-44 victory.

The Broncos traveled to Minneapolis to take on the Lions just a week after the Lions defeated Russell 67-55 at the Hoisington tournament.  This one would not prove to be as close as the Lions used suffocating defense for the entire four quarters.  The Lions jumped out to a 15-6 first quarter lead and never looked back, holding the Broncos to single digits each quarter.  Minneapolis built a 25 point lead by the end of the 3rd quarter and the fourth proved to be more of the same as the Lions defeated the Broncos by a score of 54-24.

The wins improved the Lions to 6-1 in league play and 11-3 overall.  The Lions will travel to Sacred Heart this Friday to take on the Knights.  Scoring for the past week is listed below.
