December 14, 2009

The Minneapolis wrestling team hosted the Minneapolis Invitational Tournament December 12 at the high school, winning the tournament with a commanding 191 points.  Russell took 2nd with 110 points, and Lyons came in just below with 109.5 points, capturing 3rd.  Twelve Lion wrestlers wrestled in consolation and final rounds, receiving medals.

Receiving the outstanding wrestler of the tournament was John Corman from weight class 125.  According to Coach Giles, “John Corman is extremely conscientious about his training for wrestling.”  A returning state place winner finishing 5th last season, Corman won 30 matches as a junior.  Corman defeated Morgan Shorter, a state placer for 4A in the final round.  Shorter was the only wrestler to score against Corman in the tournament.

The following wrestlers won the championship match, placing first for the Lions:  John Corman, Nicholas Torres, Connor Flegler, and Ell-Saline wrestler competing for the Lions, Tate Omli.  In second place were Adam Klein, Dillon Hackett, and Jose Arias (also from Ell-Saline).

Earning third place was Weston Penn, Rex Trahan, and Austin Crosson. Sean Ussrey and Collin Trickle placed fourth, also earning medals.
