MJH Boys Place 1st at Pre-Season Tournament

by Dale Henderson

November 13, 2009

The MJH boy’s basketball team got their season off to a fast start capturing the championship of their own preseason tournament.  In the season and tourney opener the young Lions defeated Solomon 39-16.  They followed that with a stirring come from behind victory over rival Beloit, 21-19.  The guys then captured the first place medals with a 20-14 win over Sacred Heart.

Scoring for the Lions in the game versus Solomon were: Skyler Reitbrock-2, Jake Fleming-4, Gage Mortimer-4, Josh Macy-9, Brandon Davis-8, and Alex Yoxall-12.  The Beloit game scoring was:  Rietbrock-5, Macy-12, Davis-2, and Yoxall-2.  Against Sacred Heart, the scoring was:  Rietbrock 4, Macy-2, Gunner Mick-2, Davis-5, Yoxall-7.

“This is obviously a great way to start the season.  To win the tournament and to defeat two key rivals at the same time was huge for the guy’s confidence.  Defense definitely keyed all three wins as I thought we brought great intensity all three nights and the guys did a great job of executing the different ways we asked them to play.  We were able to get a lot of points off of our defense in the Solomon game that we did not get in the two remaining games, but both teams had a hard time scoring against us.  The Beloit win was especially satisfying because the guys came from 5 points down late in the game to get the win," stated Coach Dale Henderson.

We have thirty young men out for basketball this year, which speaks well for the program.  They are all working hard to make each other better and the support between them has been great.  The B and C teams will have their first action next week against Bennington and Beloit.
