District Awarded Grant

by Tammy Schmidt

January 04, 2010

The USD 239 School Health Council has received $5,830 in grant monies to promote the health and wellness of students and staff.  The Kansas Coordinated School Health awarded the district $4,830 and Blue Cross Blue Shield awarded $1,000.  The Council met on December 15, 2009, to re-evaluate the USD 239 District Wellness Policy and budget the grant monies.

The District Wellness Policy sets standards of wellness in the areas of nutrition, nutrition education, physical activity, and health education.  The Council is continually looking at areas in which they can make the educational environment healthier for students and staff.  Grant monies will be spent on tobacco use prevention, nutrition education, fitness backpack education, staff wellness program, and the creation of an after school Wellness Club offered to those not involved in athletics and any staff member that wants to be involved.

Congratulations to the School Health Council Members, which include Jeff Giles, Lora Lonberger, Holly Nelson, Val Beikmann, Dr. Larry Combs, Tammy Schmidt, Amber Allison, Peggy Kleiber, and Peg Condray.  Your dedication to USD 239 is appreciated!
